1. You’re overthinking all the things you want to do.
2. You are unmotivated.
3. Discouraged
4. You believe you have to have it all together before making real moves.
5. Fear
So, I have dealt with my share of many of these issues before. I now have a cheat way on how to overcome most it not all of these to snap me back into my power zone and I sharing them with you.
1. Overthinking. When I was stuck trying to fix everything in my head first I realized why not write it down?
Once I began writing my thoughts on paper it was like magic. I had a clearer understanding of what my brain was trying to do. Then I was able to begin making smaller micro steps into the directions I wanted to take.
My suggestion here is to write down your thoughts first. That includes goals, to do lists, appointments, things you want and don’t want and even your FEELINGS.
This is going to help you take small steps forward, and for those that don’t believe it so, (just trust the process).
2. Motivation. I like this word. A lot. But, this word has a twist to it. It’s actually not actionable until we chose to MAKE IT SO. We all have ways that inspire us and get us into moods that make us want to change. I challenge you to use what you got to motivate you. Turn on a podcast, a YouTube video, but don’t stay in bed! Keep moving. One step forward is better than no strides at all. As long as you are moving, you will keep moving. Motivation builds as you are currently involved in something. In order for us to continue to want to do something, we have to be doing it. SO do that thing, and do it for a few minutes. It doesn’t have to be, for very long, just a few minutes. Set aside time in your day, and take one actionable step. The chances of you continuing to, will increase.
3. Discouragement.
There are times when feeling discouraged can really bring you down, because being discouraged for a time requires more energy out of you to get back into a state of mind of even wanting to try something again. We can face a loss, and take it as the end all be all, or we can look at it as what is this circumstance trying to teach or show me. The challenge here is to view the situation you face that is causing discouragement, and ask yourself, what is it that I have to gain from this?
For me, it was a battle of losing weight.
I had hired a personal trainer, which was very expensive by the way. With the promise and hopes that I was going to lose the extra weight. After several months of training sessions and no results, and even worse the scale reflecting the same weight as when I had first signed up, this made me extremely discouraged, and of course nearly wanting to give up.
The opportunity here was for me to go inward, and ask myself what is this circumstance trying to teach me. So I began to count the good things that came out of it. There were many. First, I learned how to use machines in the gym. I learned how important form was when you are trying to do a squat. I learned that I really didn’t care about nutrition, and this was a big part of my weight loss journey. Perhaps the biggest gain, was learning that weight fluctuates, and that I needed to first learn the basics of working out. The understanding of what works for my body, and to change all the things that weren’t working. Could this be a better approach for you?
4. To have it all together or not to have it all together first.
Oh my gosh, has this one kept me from doing more of what I wanted to do for far too long. I always thought that if I wanted to start a youtube channel I needed to have the latest tech gear, camera equipment and the best lighting. When I wanted to become that runner, I had to make sure I had the right running clothes, and of course, those RUNING shoes for it. Or when I wanted to make music, I thought that if I just had all and only APPLE products because that’s the “Industry Standard” that, that was suddenly going to make me this music producer I had invisioned in my mind.
Out of all the things that kept me from moving forward toward living my best life, and working on the goals I had set out for myself, I can honestly say this one was the one I struggled with the most.
My new cheat way out of this is to flip this way of thinking, and to change my mind, by doing all these things for at least 5 minutes. Then after 5 minutes have gone by, another 10 minutes, so forth and so forth. I realized that once I had started something, it was building momentum. This gave me motivation I wanted to maintain, and keep on going. So, KEEP ON GOING.
5. Fear. You can let fear become stronger than your will to take on the day. If that happens, we end up failing to launch at anything. Fear is powerful but so is the amount you’re willing to let it drive you to tricking your brain into doing the exact opposite of what you’re fearful of and trying to avoid. So, when I am faced with times of much fear it could be to start something that is so new to me, I tell myself that the only thing that I’ve got to lose by allowing fear to keep me stagnant is the fact that I would have had to live with the regret of never taking a chance. My challenge to you is to take a shot at life. That one thing you are putting off because the brain is telling you not too, challenge it, and do it anyway.
